Here's an example.  The original photo was badly torn across his left breast, with a smaller tear above his right shoulder.

Some quick editing of the scanned image produces a nearly perfect copy.  Side-by-side, you can still see the repair, but anyone looking at the repaired image by itself will never know it was repaired unless you tell them.
